Housing & Hazards

SAFE Bangla

What are we doing to help?

The Housing & Hazards Group develops practical methodologies and links professionals, academics and practitioners to make safer, hazard-resistant housing available and affordable to vulnerable rural communities around the world.

Our activities include raising awareness of shelter and environmental issues in developing countries and in the UK. Group members include a wide range of practical building, geoscience and environmental expertise.

Housing & Hazards has contributed to practical and academic research since 1994.

Practical Research

• The Housing & Hazards Group have conducted field research in northern Bangladesh. Two studies (nine months in 1996-7 and six months in 1998-9) have clarified the options available to rural home-builders. Additional studies by our Bangladeshi collagues have taken this pioneering work forward in central and southern Bangladesh during 2000-02.

Now, you can join in our fieldwork!

H&H has teamed up with SAFE and BRIF
an NGO based nearby, to develop a series
of annual workshops aimed at promoting
Building for Safety issues.  The first ran
in September 2010. For more details...

The Housing & Hazards Group is currently working to produce and deliver a national strategy for housing in Bangladesh. This will provide a framework for the mission of the Group and other organisations to achieve secure, sustainable, affordable and durable housing for all in Bangladesh.

We are supporting the recently created grass-roots NGO Simple Action For the Environment (SAFE) in delivering appropriate technologies to the people and builders of rural Bangladesh

Activities

• The Group  constructed a demonstration bamboo frame at the Eden Project in Cornwall to raise awareness of indigenous building systems.
