In October 2003 the Race Equality Group was established by the University. Its terms of reference are as follows :-
Responsible for 'championing' the spirit and intentions of the Equal Opportunities Policy and Race Equality Policy, through promotion of knowledge and understanding of race issues and regular reports on progress to other committees, Senate and Council as required and contributing to the formal annual Equal Opportunities report to Council in the Lent term.
Responsible for confirming that the measurable changes relating to race matters required by the Action Plan are taking place, according to the timescale envisaged.
Initiating audits and receiving reports on areas of the University's activity relating to race matters to monitor and review the requirements of the Action Plan.
Responsible for advising on the priorities of different actions relating to race matters taking into account the resources required for implementation.
Responsible for revising the Action Plan as necessary to take account both of progress towards it targets and additional responsibilities imposed by, for example, new or existing legislation.
Receive reports on racial or other discriminatory incidents together with a review from the harassment advisors network.
Assess priorities and report to appropriate resource holding committees or officers where there are significant resource implications in equality issues relating to race.
Regular meetings to be held at least once per term and additional meetings as required.
Establish working groups as required calling upon expertise that may be outside the Race Equality Group as appropriate.
