What is Racial Equality?

Like elsewhere in society, individuals working at the University of Exeter can face discrimination because of their colour, ethnicity, religion, language and race. To create a working environment where all students, staff and others associated with university are treated with –dignity and respect, the university has developed a Race Equality Policy.

What is our Race Equality Policy?

The Racial Equality Policy and Action Plan states what the university community is actually doing to create a working environment that is respectful for cultural diversity. For example:

• The university’s Race Equality Group is responsible for the promotion of race equality and for the implementation, monitoring and review of the Race Equality Policy and Action Plan
• The Race Equality Action Plan includes how the Racial Equality Policy impacts on all our policies and practices
• Equal opportunities advisors work with Schools and Divisions regarding the issues of racial equality
• Awareness of race equality issues in teaching and learning and all other aspects of the university’s activities

A way for individuals or groups to raise freely any racial inequality that they may have encountered at the university

All members of the University community have a personal responsibility to behave in a way that treats people fairly and encourages good relations between people of different racial groups. Under the Race Equality Policy inappropriate behaviour should be challenged and racism, whether witting or unwitting should be confronted.

What does this mean in practice?

The Racial Equality Policy aims to ensure that

• The publicity and marketing of University of Exeter reflects and promotes racial equality
• The University actively works towards increasing the diversity of its staff and student population
• Race equality awareness and delivery will become integral aspects of learning and teaching and all other activities at the University
• Any member of the University’s community is able to make a complaint if they feel they have been treated unfairly or discriminated against because of colour, ethnicity, religion, language or race. Please refer to the website at :-
